Hi,   I'm   P.A.

my story

The skin (yes, including your hair) is the biggest organ on the body, and if you don’t look after it you may find that it’s unhealthy, too dry or too greasy. Trust me, it can feel like you don’t have time for a proper skincare routine, but there are some things that you really do have to make time for – skincare is one of them. Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated–in fact, it’s best when it’s not.  You can master the basics of pampering and get your skincare routine under control without it taking much time.

You can read more here about skin care options that will enhance your look quickly, but that’ll likely cost you a pretty penny.  However, there are some simple things that you can do at home. Below are five simple tips to get you started on your skincare journey!

1. Use Sunscreen

One of the most important ways to protect your skin? Sunscreen. Yes, even if you’re black. You are exposed to the sun every day – even when it’s cloudy outside! Instead of worrying about whether your skin is going to burn, wear a layer of sunscreen or use a face moisturizer with sunscreen in it on exposed skin, no matter what weather. UV rays can affect you even when it’s foggy, so be vigilant. Stay in the shade, wear a sunhat and protect your eyes with sunglasses!

2. Stop Smoking or Definitely Don’t Start

If you ever wanted a hobby that will make you look old, it’s smoking. Puckering your lips wrinkles your skin prematurely and the harmful contents in cigarettes can age your skin at an exponential rate. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the skin, decreasing  blood flow and cutting off oxygen to your skin.  This will make your skin appear dull and devoid of life. It also damages the elastin and collagen in your skin, so this is one activity better set aside or to stay away from altogether.

3. Be Gentle With Your Skin

Daily cleansing and shaving will damage your skin, but you need to keep it gentle. Did you know that you run the risk of  stripping the oils from your skin if you spend too long immersed in a bath or in the shower?  Those oils maintain the health of your skin, act as a natural moisturizer and protective barrier against the elements. Avoid strong soaps and detergents and be careful when you shave. Always use a gentle moisturizer and don’t vigorously rub your skin dry.

4. Maintain A Healthy Diet

Ever heard of skinny fat? That look a skinny woman has, but still looks somehow unhealthy with saggy skin? Well, you are what you eat.  Being skinny isn’t the end all be all, being healthy is.  And your skin will snitch on you if you maintain a diet that mainly consists of over processed and junk foods. Instead, improve your skin and grow longer, healthier hair with a healthy diet of fruit, vegetables and tons of protein. Unhealthy fats are often sweated out and can clog the pores, so having a balanced diet will minimize pesky skin issues, such as breakouts.

5. Cater to Your Specific Skin Needs

If you don’t suffer from rosacea, don’t invest in products used to treat rosacea.  If you have sensitive skin, avoid products with harsher ingredients.  I get it. With all the products out there making big promises, it can be difficult to actually tell which one is right for you.  Here’s where keeping it simple matters, and Evidence Skin Care does just that.  ESK is an Australian made, cruelty-free, evidence-based skin care line, designed to repair and protect your skin from the effects of a harsh environment and the aging process.

First, they start you off with a quiz to really zone in on what your unique skin issues are. Then, they use your results to provide a uniquely tailored skincare regimen kit for you (yes, pregnant mamas, they even  have you in mind!).  The products are super effective, created by doctors and dermatologists, using ingredients based on scientifically proven performance, including Retinal, ascorbic Acid, Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid.

I have sensitive skin and break out easily.  ESK put together the following kit for me based on those skin concerns:

  • Calming Cleanse – A gentle creamy soap free cleanser.
  • B Calm – A light moisturising cream, for skin that is sensitive, oily or acne prone.
  • Zinc Shade – Zinc Shade provides the protection you need from both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
  • Ultimate A+ – A Vitamin A (Retinal) and B3 (Niacinamide) based night cream. Vitamin A is the go-to ingredient for anti-aging and acne. Retinal (very rarely used) is the most effective and least irritating form.

The sleek pump bottles each of the products come in are both numbered and labeled with “AM” or “PM” making it easy to follow and knowing which product to use and when and in what order.  It doesn’t get any simpler than this, folks.

After only three weeks, my skin looked and felt softer, appeared smoother and more even, brighter and more glowing. Check out my photos on IG and let me know if you agree.

I enjoy using the full range, as each product has a clean, fresh scent, is gentle and feels great on my skin, but my top pick is  the Ultimate A+. Every time I use it at night, I wake up to fresh, supple skin.  And let me tell you, I put these products through the ringer.  I was under several back to back deadlines, so I hadn’t slept much and my stress levels were definitely elevated.  I still saw pretty awesome results.

Let me know in the comments what your current skincare routine is!
